Sheriff's Office To Offer Youth Awareness Course

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office will host a new youth awareness class called "Knowledge is Power - Know the Law." This class is an effort to educate youths and their parents about laws applicable to young persons under the age of eighteen. The class is open to middle and high school students and their parents and is free of charge. It is a four hour course that will be held on the second Saturday of each month, commencing July 10, 2004 . The class will be conducted at the Sheriff's Office located at 5755 E. Milton Rd. , Milton , Florida . The class will be held in the Training Room from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

As members of society, young people need to know their rights, privileges, and responsibilities. Knowing the law enables them to understand their rights, meet their responsibilities, and respect themselves and others. They will learn that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" and that they must not blame friends or family for wrong choices that they may make and the consequences thereof.

Knowing the law helps adolescents to make good decisions regarding their education, job, or behavior. It assists them in considering the law and weighing all of the consequences before they act.

The class will provide an opportunity for youths and their parents to learn about campus crimes and how to avoid being caught up in them, what motivates people to commit crimes, the issue of illegal drug usage and the consequences of drinking and driving. A tour of the Santa Rosa County Jail will also be given where class participants can see and experience what an inmate's life is like behind bars. Those attending the class will also learn about the role of parenting and the responsibility/liability a parent has over a minor child. They will gain an awareness as to how making right choices can lead to a trouble-free life.

If you would like to register for this one day class, please call Cindy Sarver at (850) 983-1236. Registrations will be taken on a first come, first serve basis and class size is limited to 25 participants.
