PRESS RELEASE

2/22/09

Sheriff's Office Negotiators and SWAT Team Peacefully End Standoff in Pace

Earlier this afternoon, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene of a possible overdose in Pace. At 1252 hours, Sheriff's Office dispatch received a call from the suspect's wife stating that her husband had taken a large amount of prescription medication and wanted to harm himself. The man was allegedly distraught over issues that were going on in his life that are not being disclosed. The wife was not home at the time; however she was talking to him on his phone. The suspect, identified as David Brojanac (28 years old) told his wife that if he heard any sirens or law enforcement personnel coming to the scene, he would shoot himself with a shotgun. When law enforcement arrived in the area of the suspect's residence ( 3850 Doris Drive , Pace), they were told that a friend of the suspect (who was aware of the situation) had tried to make contact with the suspect at the suspect's residence, but the suspect wouldn't come to the door. The suspect also failed to answer his phone when law enforcement tried to call him. Due to the allegations and the circumstances, Sheriff's Office Crisis Negotiators and the SWAT Team were called to the scene. Negotiators continued to attempt contact with the suspect over the phone for approximately one hour with no success. Eventually, negotiators were able to make phone contact with the suspect and talked to him for approximately 2 ½ hours before convincing him to peacefully come outside to meet with awaiting SWAT members. The suspect exited the front door of the residence at 1643 hours and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was then transported to West Florida Hospital to undergo an evaluation. No charges were filed. Certain side streets were blocked off by deputies throughout the standoff for pubic safety issues. The suspect denied being in possession of a shotgun during the standoff. No further information is available.
